Muirfield Drive Bike Lanes - Analysis of Two Alternatives
A public involvement was held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Wyandott Elementary, 5620 Dublinshire Drive, to discuss the addition of bike lanes to Muirfield Drive between Brand Road and Glick Road. The meeting involved a short presentation by City staff followed by an open house portion where the public interacted one-on-one with City staff.
Public comments are being accepted until Friday, July 22, 2011. After the comment period has ended, City Staff will compile a report to City Council which will include all public comments received along with a recommendation to Council. The report is currently scheduled to go to Council on August 1, 2011.

Do we really need to spend money on this? Isn't the existing bike path good enough? This idea sounds ad good as parking on Bridge St.

If you have to do one, go with alternative 1 since it does not impact the median that exists. However, the costs are very high. Why is this being done? The road is wide enough for bikes to use along with with autos. I'd rather see money being spent to connect the walking and biking trails on the north and sout side of the Brand Rd roundabout.

I ride on Muirfield Drive at least once a week, and have never encountered any problems because it is a nice, wide thoroughfare. Traffic has never been that heavy that cars and bikes could not share the road adequately. I do not see the need for any bike lanes on the street, as they sometimes create a false sense of security for bikers, and some problems with drivers if the cyclist is not in the bike lane for some reason (left turn, debris, etc.). I would take the money that is possibly going to be spent and make sure the Brand Road bike paths, lanes, etc. are implemented. Brand really needs something, and Muirfield does not.

I agree with Ken. As a motorist I never have problems passing cyclists on Muirfield with it's wide 2 lanes on both sides. Brand Road is a winding, narrow stretch, and bikes and cars alike would benefit from a bike lane or bike path (especially between Coffman and Dublin Rds). A path there would also provide a much needed link between existing trails.

I too agree with Ken and Michele. Muirfield Drive has plenty of room for bikes already and modest traffic. Adding a bike path parallel to Brand, preferably from Dublin Road all the way to Industrial Parkway would be much more helpful. That road is a lot narrower, handles at least as much traffic, and the speed differential between cars and bikes west of Hyland-Croy is huge. Given the increased bike traffic on the road from the Glacier Ridge park, that area should have more focus in my opinion.

I agree with Ken, Michelle, and John - no for Muirfield, yes for Brand Rd
Kirk Hendricks Posted on July 23, 2011
I cannot believe that this is the best use of our taxpayer funds to add bike paths when there is already a dedicated path along this route. The idea of paths already Brand Road has more merit. Scrap this plan and find a better use of these funds. If nothing else, retain the funds for a project that would truly improve our community.

Just the idea shows the lack of fiscal responsibility. Especially given the economic conditions. Spending $$$ amount of money to provide for a relatively few Lance Armstrong lookalikes is not reponsible. I like Archery. How about the City build me an Acrhery Center for me and a dozen of my friends. No to this, and my Archery Center : (. Big money spent should be for the good of the masses in Dublin, not a select few. Lets get repsonsible with our monies shall we. My 2 cents

Agree that bike 'lanes' on Brand Rd. would be the better alternative for funding. I DO believe that money should be spent on bike lanes or signage. I frequently bike on Dublin roads (Brand, Dublin Rd, Hyland Croy, etc.) and at least 1-2 times per week am yelled at by drivers who tell me to get on the 'bike path' (even though I'm right at the edgeline). However, if you have ever biked on a bike path, you would realize that these paths are not the safest way to bike for exercise (only if you are taking a very leisurely ride), since you need to stop at every cross road given that drivers rarely stop at Stop signs or at intersections to let bikers cross. What about 'Share the Road' signs -- have those been considered? Those would seem to be a more economical approach and could be implemented widely throughout the city as other cities/towns have done. Then, perhaps drivers will understand that bikers have the same rights to be on the road as they do.

The 2009 MORPC Ride Solutions map(WWW>morpc.com/ridesolutions) lists Muirfield Drive from Brand to Glick as GOOD! It has a description of "Low-traffic roadway(s) where bicyclists and motorists can more safely share the road. Suitable for bicyclists with basic skills." Upkeep and connecting of current pathways should be of a higher priority than construction along Muirfield Drive. Brand Road or a path along Riverside Drive to the DAC or Scioto would be a better use of funds.

I agree. This seems to be a waste. We already have paths in that area and the 2 lanes accomodates bikers/cars on the road, if needed. Plz focus on areas that do not have paths (Brand Rd, Glick between Dublin Rd and Muirfield, and I'm sure there are others). Good to know we are investing in community, but let's make decisions that make sense!

To Kirk Hendricks: There isn't a dedicated bike path along Muirfield Dr. The paths you are referring to are NOT dedicated bike paths, they are private Muirfield paths designed more for walking than biking because of the sudden steep grades in many parts. They also end unexpectedly on streets after which one must then find where the path picks up again. There is NO direct bike path between Brand & Glick on Muirfield dr. To All the Rest of you: As a Muirfield resident with 4 children, we have always found riding on Muirfield drive to be dangerous. ALL motorists are not friendly and insist on driving close to bicyclists even though the lane passing lane is wide open. There are narrow bridges on Muirfield drive that really make it tough on bicyclists, especially kids riding to meet friends at the Dublin North Pool or riding with their families to Old Dublin. The paths are just for serious adult riders who don't mind having close contact with cars. They're for children (anyone under 18) too who would greatly benefit from a dedicated bike lane. We fully realize the bike lane does not remove all risk but it does mitigate it substantially. Our family fully support this path as well as bike paths along Glick Rd and Brand Rd.
